What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is the specific treatment and exercise-based physiotherapy for patients suffering from vestibular disorders.

When should I seek Vestibular Rehabilitation?

If you are suffering from dizziness, vertigo, nausea, motion sickness, visual disturbances, unsteadiness and loss of balance, you may be suffering from a vestibular disorder.
To receive treatment you may be referred by your GP or an ENT Specialist but this is not essential.

What does treatment involve?

Treatment follows firstly an in-depth detailed assessment to determine the type of
disorder and cause of the symptoms. Rehabilitation programs are then specific to
each person, dependent on the assessment findings.

Treatment may consist of:

  • Specific manoeuvres

  • Exercises to improve eye and head co-ordination

  • Treatment of neck and shoulders

  • Exercises to improve balance

  • Exercises to improve co-ordination

  • Education and advice regarding management of symptoms

Often an essential part of vestibular rehabilitation is establishing a home exercise program as repetition of exercises at home is important for the success of rehabilitation.

How can Vestibular Rehabilitation help me?

The benefits of Vestibular Rehabilitation may include:

  • Reduced sensation of vertigo

  • Reduced sensation of dizziness

  • Improved balance

  • Reduced anxiety

  • Improved confidence to return to usual activities
